How do I use Smarthost??

I have been trying to get alert notifications sent to my personal Gmail account.  I have tried using the information posted here by Wolfgang: http://astaro.org/showthread.php?t=17855

Do I need to do all this if I do not have a internal mail server?  I do not remember having to do this with version 7.009, it worked fine then and I did not have this proxy enabled.

I went in and enabled the smarthost tried to enter my gmail information:

smpt.gmail.com  then my account details  (Still not working)

tried using my ISP provided email information since I have seen you gotta put your ISP's information in:

smtp.comcast.net  then my account details  (Still not working)

I tried creating a dummy server on the main Global page of the SMTP proxy, confused why I need to when I have no internal server...

Is there something I need to change too in the "Advanced Settings" above the Smarthost section of the Advanced tab other than the default that is there?

Anyone know what I can do?  What am I not doing right?  This is confusing from how it was working fine before.  Thanks

Just change your alert notification email address to your @gmail.com address. It will get routed there automatically.

I have my email address there, I am not receiving any alerts and I keep asking what to do and all I am reading about is that I have to use this Smarthost stuff.

This is why I am confused now...never had this problem in 7.009, the alerts worked fine, that is why it is confusing!  lol
