syslog daemon wont start

Since yesterday the syslog daemon wont start, i dont know why and i cant check the logs (because of the stoped syslog daeom).

when i try to start syslogd over /etc/init.d i got the following error message:

:: Starting Loggingio.c: bind_unix_socket(): bind failed /var/chroot-pop3/dev/log (Address already in use)
Error initializing configuration, exiting.
startproc:  exit status of parent of /sbin/syslog-ng: 1

does anyone knows a solution for this?

    The system I'm using is a pc with astaro 6 installed. Its been running for a very long time without issues. I had some power failures and brownouts and this is what happened. There is only one partition having problems, so I dont think it is the disk going bad. the fsck done while booting does not seem to find issues, but it does seem to take a few seconds longer than usual to complete. I cannot seem to be able to get into single user mode from the console because the partition is mounted ro. Is there a way I can force a single user mode from the boot prompt so that I run fsck and try to repair the partition? I noticed the problem when my daily reports stopped coming and traced it down to this. ANy help in repairing the partition would be very helpful.

    Use a linux CD-boot distro such as "RIP - Recovery Is Possible" or Knoppix, boot up from the CD, and fsck the partition(s).

    If the filesystem is badly damaged, you'll probably need to re-install and restore from backup.

    If you don't have a backup, search these forums, I believe there is a way to create one on the console.
