AStaro 7.002 DNS question!

Hi ... currently run an active directory domain where my Small Business Server 2003 machine is the DNS server, and I have a Sonic Wall applicance as a Gateway. I've been checking out ASG software 7.002, and am a little confused as to the right DNS settings both in ASG and also as to what I need to do to adjust SBS2003's default DNS settings.
Can someone give me some tips on this? For example, all clients currently point to the SBS2003 machine for DNS in their TCP/IP network settings. Would this stay the same? Does DNS in SBS2003 need to be tweaked regarding Forwarders? What should the settings be in ASG?

    Sounds like you just need to ensure that your SBS2003 server can resolve external IP addresses (may need an outbound rule allowing traffic on port 53) and then you shouldn't have to change anything else.

    If you want, you can then have the Astaro DNS proxy forward requests to the SBS2003 server.

    Or, you could setup the SBS2003 server to forward recursive requests to the firewall.

    It all depends on what your goals are.

    Here is what works for me:

    I have my SBS Server's IP set to 192.168.16.2 and my ASG set to 192.168.16.1

    The DNS in my SBS uses 192.168.16.1 as its only forwarder, and the ASG uses my ISP DNS as its forwarders.

    SBS uses 127.0.0.1 as its primary DNS address and 192.168.16.1 as the secondary.

    Workstations with static IPs get 192.168.16.2 as the primary DNS and 192.168.16.1 as the secondary.  The DHCP server with ASG uses the same addresses.  DHCP on my SBS is not installed.

    This way, a DNS request first goes to my SBS, then to the ASG, and then out to the internet.

    This may not be perfect, and there may be a better way.  All I can tell you about this config is that it works.
