Well I have Vonage and enabling the srvices did nothing for me. Another funny this is that you you disable dhcp on the vonage router then the phone dosen't work. It really would be nice to dig in to this topic.
I may have something usefull to add to this in a couple of weeks. I'm setting up Asterisk here at the office and going to kill all this NAT'ing with RTP and SIP and finally post a definitave answer on this SIP Proxy subject.

i'm using the proxy for security reason:
i've put my voip adapter to it's own vlan; activated the sip proxy in transparent mode and allowed only the adapter to communicate through it. the adapter is configured as described by my voip provider (i'm using sipgate) but the stun server was deleted in the adapter configuration.
everything works well (incomming and outgoing calls)
