"Ghost" space and other issues

I've ran into a little bit of an issue over the last two days that I can't seem to figure out or resolve and I am afraid is meaning my server is somehow corrupted.

For starters, yesterday I tried to do the 5.101 update and it would not complete installing.  Although it didn't appear to be a memory issue I logged in and deleted the up2date packages (both the 5.101 and 5.102), manually grabbed the 5.101 and tried installing.  It still failed.

Second, after the above I started getting the following message sent to me once an hour: 

[INFO-150] Root partition mounted at / is filling up - please check

The reports show only about 15% use of 3gb.  I have the log file reporting set to first report when the space used is 85% and it shows only 4% used currently.  The other graphs together total about 11%.  Manually inspecting through the console I don't see anything wrong in the way of huge files or the likes.

I decided to try rebooting and see if that would help.  I could not even do that!  I waited over 30 minutes after trying both a restart and a shutdown from the webadmin and nothing happened.  Only through the console I was able to get it to reboot.

Last night I again I deleted the up2date files and then I shut off the auto-download of the them, hoping that once the system ran through its midnight reporting things would get back on track but lo-and-behold, this morning the updates were downloaded anyhow and I am still getting the --root filling up-- report.

Any help would be appreciated.

    You can try df at console.

    Has the machine been running in a cool environment, on conditioned power? (not necesssary a UPS, but a line conditioner -forget about a surge strip!)

    It might be easier to backup and reinstall, then see if the problem reappears. Some BIOS's have hard disk testing utilities; that could be run too...

    I'm not sure why or how but a second reboot from the console seems to have done the trick. Possibly just a random glitch somewhere that may never show (I hope) again.

    BTW: Using df   at the console is how I removed the up2date files.  [:)]

    One quick addition: the log partition monitoring / log file deletion won't help you in that case, because the notification is about the root partition. The harddisk usage of the root partition should be failry constant, so no automatic file management is needed for it.

    It would  have been quite interesting which files filled up your root partition. But if it is fixed, it's OK too. :-)
