Embedded Graphs in Report - *.png / *.jpg?

Out of the box, RRDtool (which is responsible for the image creation) can only create GIF or PNG. PNG output is recommended, since it takes up to 40% less disk space and 20-30% less time to generate than a GIF file.

Probably it is only a matter of time until PNG is supported in all clients; it is  already fairly wide-spread and I am tempted to say that every application supporting jpeg but not png is antiquated. :-)

I didn't think so at first, but it is rather simple to change to .gif graphics. You just have to do a search and replace on three files:
/usr/local/bin/reportgen.pl
/usr/local/bin/create_rrd_graphs.pl
/usr/local/bin/notifier.pl (if you want to have executive reports).
That should do the trick, but remember: modifications on the console done by root void your support.

I am still not sure why you need this. GMX can not display png graphics? Seems strange ...

well I posted a support request at GMX last week and they did not answer until now.

Corrigenda: They did answer, but not with the solution. Investigation is running.

GMX does not display embedded png-graphics in *Fullview*... neither does LotusNotes when receiving an copied mail from GMX. If you forward the mail from GMX, the png's are attached as separate files.

just wanted to say that the issue is still pending @ gmx

until today they were not able to identify the mail item affected although I've explained it 3 times.

 

OK, I have news on that issue as well. Although it is not planned to change the image type for the reporting, I regard it as a better approach to not have the code being specific to a special image type. In course of recent improvements to the notification system, I changed the code in notifier.pl to accept any image file formats.
So there are only two locations in the code left which must be tweaked. But I still wonder what problem gmx could probably have with png images, and I am keen to hear what excuse they have for that issue. :-)

Hmmm, I see this same problem with my executive reports.  I have them sent to my GMail account and use Firefox to read them.  The graphs have never been displayed.  I thought Firefox had the ability to view PNG's, no?  Anybody else tried this?  I'll try the .gif change and see if that works.

I can't say anything about gmail, but I am sure that firefox can handle png's. Maybe gmail strips the images of the mail? Did you ever try to re-send the executive report from your gmail account to another account where you can use a "real" mail client (not a web-based one) ?

Ah, PS: the code change in the notifier was not yet released, so you need to change that as well.  As far as I know, the change will be in the next up2date, which will probably overwrite your manual changes.

Yes, this is a problem on the email provider side (webmodule for displaying HTML formatted Mails). If I connect to my E-mail service via IMAP from Outlook, all is well

But I want to have that fixed by GMX or at least a good reason why this does not work.

Support of GMX itself did not recognise the attachements in the mail, because they are completely stripped out, as Andreas said, but if you then forward the mail the png's appear as attachement from the middle of nowhere.

Andreas, did I understand you correctly that you are now officially changing to the gif format? Since Symantecs Virusscan is unhappy about png's the Gateway is stripping them out. (Heuristic Alert) but only in my configuration, I think...

I am sorry, but you misunderstood that. We are not going away from png as the default image type; it is not even planned to make that configurable (at least at the moment). 

But thinking about that whole issue I decided that it would be a cleaner approach (from the programmers point of view) to not have hard-coded image types in the code, and I might change that in the further development of ASL.

Many answers from GMX but they seem to be swamped by my question. After months they told me they do not do script analysis and how i can get rid of "unwanted duplicates".
