DNS Proxy

Everytime, when I restart my Firewall (5.023) I'm not able to connect to the internet. All interfaces are up and running. I found a workaround for this problem, but it seems to be a bug in the dns proxy:
After restarting the Firewall, I have to go to the dns-proxy settings and change the order of the dns servers (secondary become primary...). Then, the internet acces works fine. So, I will go back to the dns-proxy settings and change the order back (secondary become secondary...) and it still works.
My question: Why I have to do this?
I know, that I can put the dns servers on the client machines to the real dns servers instead of the astaro, but I think, it should work also with the astaro as dns server.
Anywone same problems? Solutions?

    I am having the same problem.
    In one of my sites when I activate transparent mode no one can access internet. but in other modes everyone can access. When I check proxy logs I see lots of  "dumping name server stats"
    Sometimes some acceptable logs flows but those says 
    "sysquery: sendto([213.139.192.9].53): Network is unreachable" - this is the ip of my service provider. But I can ping hostnames from astaro.

    In one of my other sites I am having these "dumping ..." logs but without network is unreachable message. And I can access internet via transparetn mode.

    I got mixed.

    I'm not using an External DNS forwarder.

    I now have two boxes with different hardware doing the exact same thing.

    that's the image of my dns setup...

    I've got a second setup where i checked the listen on external with the same isssue.

    Hi dacomb,

    I was under the impression that if you do not enter either your own DNS servers (on-site), or your ISP's DNS servers in the DNS Proxies "Forwarding Name Servers" menu, that ASL will use the Internet-wide ROOT name servers, which will be slower. 
    From the ASL manual:

    "If no name servers are entered in the Forwarding Name Servers menu, the proxy will use the Internet-wide ROOT name servers. If you or your ISP runs a name server that is closer, you should enter its IP address here. This means, however, that they are usually slower than closer name servers. The ROOT name servers are an integral part of the Internet. 15 ROOT name servers are distributed worldwide and are the basic instance for all secondary name servers."

    I'm not sure if this can cause the DNS proxy to completely go down or not. But I do know when I use my ISP's DNS nameservers in the DNS proxy forwarding name servers on ASL ver. 5.026, I no longer have any DNS Proxy problems. Works like a charm!

    Thanks for the tip... These boxes are running ASL 5.025... I haven't upgraded to 5.026... no reason other than updates tend to lock up the box and I haven't been on site to be able to reboot it.

    My issue is that I have at least 30 Astaro boxes in production in the field but with every type of net access from DSL to T-1 and many of them on Cable Modems. 

    But for some reason I have two boxes that have the exact same issue.

    I've never used a forwarding name server.  Did  you have net access drop off issues before you put in a forwarder?

    I've actually always used the forwarding nameserver, so I cannot provide any more info on that. I had a different issue with not being able to connect at all using the DNS proxy with ver. 5.022, which now works fine with 5.026.

    What baffles me is that the problem is on two different boxes. At this point, I'd agree with Simon, you might want to get in touch with support.

    EDIT:I guess it's possible that you have two flaky NICs, though it sounds highly unlikely. But, in a way that may be a logical reason why sometimes it works and other times it does not. I thought I read another user that traced a similar problem down to the NIC.

    Thanks for the help fellas.  I'm in contact with email support on this issue.  I'll keep you updated as I know more.

    I did get one response that indicated there may be a bug. But that's all the info I've received so far.

    As far as the NICs go... well, they're Intel Pro/100 S Server Adapters fresh out of the box... But hey, anything is possible with hardware [:)]

    Anyway, phase two of my testing is going to be this:

    I've removed both boxes from their respective locations and brought them as is to my office.  I have a T1 there instead of a cable modem.  My hope is that I can either replicate the problem on a completely different interent backbone and narrow it down to the box or not have any issue at all and blame it on good ole' Comcast [;)]

    I'll let you know what the scientific process clues me in on.

    It is conceivable that Comcast is blocking the root servers or other direct DNS lookups.

    This can be tested with NSLookup and/or Dig.

    Well, anything is possible with Comcast, although it's unlikely.

    I have at least 6 other Comcast cable internet connections on Astaro boxes that I can think of off the top of my head without this issue.  But i'll run the tests anyway...
