SMTP Feature Request

Have an additional network testing tool that generates a trivial test mail message, and shows in a window the SMTP dialog session. Many people insist that they set up their mail proxies right; if they were to see a simple session (you can specify the SMTP address to send a message to), they might come to realize what they have configured wrong...

    seems to be too much effort for some guys running a smtp environment not knowing what they are doing.

    Yeah; but our jobs on these boards would be much simpler if we could just say, "Have you run the 'SMTP test'?" when somebody is having a mail issue.

    And what frequently happens is novices run into problems, don't understand that they are doing something wrong, and then suppose that the product just doesn't work -more lost Linux firewall mindshare...

    In the meantime, I'm going to write such a bash script; it will take an Email address as its argument and simply use the highest preference MX for the target address's domain and pop off a message, showing the SMTP dialog...

    Very interested in getting a copy of that script, should you decide to write it.
