how can user authentication help

This may sound crazy but how can user authentication help. I see that the service supports active directory and 2000 radius servers. Thats pretty nice but how can this be used to add functinality to a network.

    The idea behind having external authentication server cmmunication capabilitiess in ASL, is that when you create a new user ID on a file server or domain, that new user can then automatically have VPN roadwarrior access to the ASL box.

    This eliminates the need for maintaining a duplicate set of user accounts and passwords on the ASL box for all the people with accounts on the local office file server, who might also need remote VPN access to the LAN.

    Ok thanks for the info. In order to set this up for users ina 2000 or 2003 domain. Is there any special software required. I've set up 2000 and 2003 rras servers before running pptp. I would like to use ipsec since its is more secure though so I assumed I may have to get a ipsec client for my users they all run 2000 xp pro and a few win 98se users.

    Regrettably, IPsec clients still cost money. You can purchase them from Astaro. Win XP will just do PPTP and L2TP on its own.

    ASL v4 does PPTP and IPsec hosting.
    ASL v5 (still in beta) does PPTP, L2TP and IPsec hosting.

    To avoid the expense of purchasing a quantity of client IPsec licenses for the end users, the most cost effective roadwarrior alternative will be to upgrade to ASL v5 once it is released, and then using WinXP's default VPN L2TP connections to it.

    Well for my testing right now. I'll go ahead and put up a windows 2003 vpn server running l2tp. Man theres got to be a freeware ipsec client out there somewhere.
