Web Bugs

What is the def of a web bug as termned in the http proxy content filter..and i am assuming it only protects regular http traffic? will it also stop web bugs inside html mails?

a webbug on a website is mostly a 1 by 1 pixel hidden image but can also be embedded in e-mail: http://www.matterform.com/spamfire/help/revenge/webbugs.htm

There is an interesting article at Heise (sorry in German) which reports that the FBI could track an extortionist by using webbugs.
