Does SMTP Proxy hold mail?

If my internal mail server is down for whatever reason, and I am running the smtp proxy on astaro, will the incoming mail be held on astaro till my mail server comes back up? 

Or will the mail just be bounced?

I don't have recipient verification switched on.

    To clarify the proxy, mail shouldn't bounce if you have recipient verification on and the internal server is down.  The server has to answer the initial request before any verification is done.  It would be a disaster to place user verification ahead of a connection check.

    I have started using user verification since those blasted dictionary attack spams started to find some domains I route.  Better to dump them at the proxy right away before checking if it is spam, virus, or anything else or delivering to the internal server and having the next server deal with it again.

    I hope you also have secondary MXs to cover the time when ASL isn't available (could happen, just less often than Exchange....).  I do a reciprocal MX with colleagues and I don't loose mail.
