Reply "syntax error in adress headings"

It means that a mailer transmitting messages to your server is not doing things according to Internet standards (a.k.a., SMTP RFC). An example is using an underscore in an SMTP address, embedding quotes, etc. This can be real fun when a mom and pop operation like AOL or MSN does it! Try getting them to conform to RFC (though I must say, I actually did have to do that once with AOL and they fixed it in a day! not shabby...)

Also, since SMTP is typically an unsecured mail protocol, any jerk can start sending it bogus-formatted mail messages; it can be part of the "Internet lifestyle"...

Is it impacting mail delivery? (i.e., somebody is not getting a message known to be 'good')

it doesn´t impacted our complete mail delivery, but the problem affected the mail conversation between our company and a partner of us. Whenever they use the newsletter- function to send all their partners links, etc. they get the 'mail undelivery' answer. They only got this problem with our mailsystem that is protected by the ASL SMTP-Proxy-Service.
So - it seems to be an incompatibility of the mailservices of both side, doesn´t it?   

Astaro is using Exim mailer, and that adheres to standards. So they are doing something a little peculiar with their mailing. You will have to get into Exim internals to diagnose what the problem with their format is. Maybe some Exim guru here will point you to where to find the 'raw' message, replete with headers (or consult an Exim forum?). Once you go over the raw message, you will see what they are doing that is funky, and possibly get them to correct it...

I noticed in the (4.016) Proxy settings a switch for MIME flagging errors; you can try toggling that off (but then your Email clients might get garbage...)
