Surf Protection Performance

I've noticed that the surf protection takes a noticeable bite out of performance when using a T-1 line -- often adding as much as a second or two to what would normally be an almost instantaneous browse.  Many users are complaining that Internet performance is worse than before the firewall was installed, and in each case stellar performance can be achieved by flicking off the surf protection.  Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions about this?  The surf protection is a great feature that is needed by many of our clients, but it also noticeably slows things down.

    well, it's true. surfprotection does slow down your internet performance.
    that is due to the fact that every request is checked against a database. surfprotection on the astaro box has no local database, but it does cache the answers. the database querys are causing a slight latency (depending on the db-server load and how "far" you are away from the database server).

    in case you need the performance and speed, maybe you should consider using the orange-web box from cobion (www.cobion.com). it is the same content-filter-engine astaro uses, but the orange-web box does have a local database. this should speed up things. updates to that database can be fetched on a daily basis and are about 5 MB big. well,at least that's what the cobion guy's told me [:)]

    side-effects: you need another box and the cobion orange-web is far more expensive then the astaro surf-protection.
