ASL 3.219 and Smarthost with Authentication

Hello,

I've already read the posts about Exim and authentication, etc.
Also the posts from Bernd.

But this changes in exim.conf don't work for me.

Can someone please help me with these questions?
A complete exim.conf-default would also be very nice :-)

1) How is a smarthost be defined in smtp-relay?

2) How can I tell exim, that he should authenticate with this host?

3) How can I define username and password.


Doing it like in the other posts, had no effort on my configuration.
I implemented smarthost - this worked.
But the logs showed me Error 503 Authentication required...

    Why not upgrade to 4.008 and patch to the new 4.010?
    It has the ability in the front end to define a smarthost as well as username/password (username/password is new in 4.010).
    If you can't upgrade to 4.010 then search the Hacking section of these forums. There have been a few postings on defining a smarthost in 3.2x (I had implemented it) as well as ones on hacking authentication into the smarthost communication for 4.0x before version 4.010.
