e-mail proxies

You need to purchase antivirus license to do this.

You would only be able to scan for key words and file extensions otherwise. 

I should have clarified..i understand about purchasing hte license..but i do not understand the directions on how to seutp the appropriate proxies... 

For SMTP, you would point your email program to use the Astaro box as your SMTP server.

Activate SMTP proxy scanner on ASL.  Enable virus scanning.
(I assume it will then scan outgoing emails)  (Unsure as usually this is used to scan incoming emails to a mail server).

Are you running a mail server locally ?

The POP3 proxy, just put in Any Any so all POP3 traffic is scanned.  Enable virus scanning.  (I assume that's how it works since we host our servers behind the firewall).
 

eeek..i cnanot run a server as i am on a home cable modem account so the mail i am sending i would not be able to scan using the Astaro box..however being able to scan all incoming is of greater concern and i am glad to see it is very easy to set that up..[:)]  Thank you!
 

SMTP proxy *should* scan any SMTP traffic (I *think*).

So that will scan mails you send.  Don't quote me on that though  [;)] 

Any - Any 
as a setting for the POP3 proxy might not be such a great idea. I would recommend to set it up to be a bit more precise like 
INTERN - Any 
at least.  

The POP3/SMTP proxies can be a bit confusing.  The official Astaro traning for engineers teaches that the SMTP proxy is only useful if you have a mail server of your own, inside your network.  In other words, it's a proxy in between your mail server and the outside world, not between you and your ISP's mail server.  If you don't have your own mail server, then you can only use the POP3 proxy.  Set the source network as your internal network, and the destination as the IP address of your ISP's mail server (you'll have to create a definition for that).  Leave the SMTP proxy alone unless you have your own mail server.

Also, the POP3 proxy is TRANSPARENT.  It will automatically intercept all incoming/outgoing POP email and will scan for viruses.  There is no need to set your mail clients to the IP address of the proxy if your email is being retrieved from a server on a network external to the Astaro firewall.

One persistent problem I'm still experiencing is that POP3 proxy transactions are still not logging, even with 4.011 installed.  Anyone have some enlightening thoughts about that?

actually i had to set the rule as internal network to any host scan as i have 5 accounts on 4 different domains that i check simultaneously with mozilla..[:)] 

and confusing to me: i got that antivir-licence and enabled the antivir-option. i am scanning all-all with transparent pop3. a set some keywords to scan for (lovsan). but all mail passes through... even after restart. humm?


  

Take a look in the /var/log/mail for messages from the scanner.
btw. do you have the latest patterns? If you want to detect virii you need to regulary update your patterns.
