SMTP relay

Just to be clear: To enable a mail server in the DMZ, one should only have to do two things:
configure smtp relay to accept mail for your domain and create a packet filter rule to allow smtp to your mail server. Correct?

Or is it just the SMTP-RELAY only?

    If you do it via the SMTP proxy you don't need any rules except to allow the mail server to talk to the ASL. Inbound connections don't talk to your DMZ server and the proxy sets up the correct rules for the rest.
