I think you confuse the concept of getting and sending mail. A mail exchanger (MX) has nothing to do with users fetching their mail via POP3, IMAP or such.
For the first point, sending mail, you have your users to set the ASL as their Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Your users send their mail via SMTP to the ASL, which relays it to the target MX.
The second point, incoming mail, is a completely different thing. The ASL firewall is designed to do deliveries between mail servers, so you need either an internal mail server the mail can be delivered to (in that case your ASL is the external MX for your domain, receives the mail, scans it, and passes it on to a server from which your users can fetch their mail, e.g. via POP or IMAP); the second (easier) case, if you don't have your own mail server for your domain (or you don't own a domain), you only need to add a packet filter rule which allows your users to fetch their mail from an external mail server (e.g. via POP or IMAP). In that case, your mail will not be virus-checked.
