Using Windows Messenger with asl

Okay.

Here's a problem that's been bugging me for a few weeks now.

I have a few pc's that I use windows messenger on.

I have a masquerading rule from internal lan - internet through the firewall (for external remote access)

I tell the Windows messenger clients to use the asl socks proxy. 

I can communicate ok with friends on the internet via WM, but when either party tries to initiate a converstation, it doesn't seem to work , but internal v-o-ip (Voice over IP) works ok( becuase the socks proxy is internal-internal.

Has anyone got internal Windows messaging using V-o-IP working from their internal net to an external user sucessfully & how.?

    Firstly I can confirm that I see the same behaviour.
    My understanding is that the file transfer and VOIP parts of the MSN Messenger comms are handled by other port numbers than 8080 (the usual SOCKS port).  I think the reason is that a proxy will not allow communication initiated from the outside, which is what these protocols require to do.  To use these features, ports need to be opened through the firewall so they can reach your recipient.  I don't do this simply because open ports are a target for attack, but it is an option, I imagine.  I'm afraid I don't know offhand what port range Messenger uses though.

    Bear in mind that my explanation is based on a pretty loose understanding of the mechanisms at work here, so it may not be a very authoritative reply!
