SMTP fails and telnet on Port 25 not allowed

I have two clients that are evaluatng the Astaro firewall product. One has Exchange as a mail server, the other has a sco box.  In both cases however, their SMTP proxying has failed after about 5-6 weeks of working successfully. When SMTP has failed, I was unable to telnet through to port 25. After verifying that the internet mail connector of the internal mail systems were not at fault, I was forced to rebuild the Astaro box. This fixed the issue immediately.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

    When this occured the box was functioning as expected. there were no errors being reported. In fact, when watching the packets hitting the firewall (using syslog Software) you can see the emails hitting port 25, being told to redirect to the inside mail server, but not going. I confirmed that this problem was not the mailserver's issue, just the firewall's.
    Before it happened, when I did a telnet to port 25 of the firewall, it would redirect the session to the mail server (as you would expect). When the problem occured, the telnet seesion (port 25) stopped dead at the firewall.  

    I rebuilt the box and all is OK now, but I'm still stumped, because this is the second time I had a client that was testing the box, and it failed on them. In both cases the NI Cards were not on the prefered hardware list, so that may have played a role.  Any ideas ?
