qmail delay notice

    I would like to know this too...

    Two days ago I sent an email to a domain which has no MX records. I have now received 50 or so emails telling me this.

    What I would like to see is something like:

    1 hour - delay notification.
    4 hours - delay notification.
    8 hours - delay notification.
    24 hours - drop message from queue and inform sender.

    I think postfix works something like this by default.

    Hi together,

    I changed the queuelifetime under /var/chroot-smtp/var/qmail/control/queuelifetime to 86400,
    which is one day.
    In addition I changed the value for the notification 
    in /etc/crontab, to "* */3 ....."
    and in /etc/crontab-static (nescessary to make
    changes persistant)

    Maybe that works for you as well!

    I have been having the same nuisance problems when I get a lot of junk mail to non-existant addresses on my domain and the return address is bad.  I get a bunch of delay notices for bounced mails, which confuses the hell out of my inbox.

    Following what Ollion above suggests I have now resolved this problem and thought I'd share that with you.
    Here's exactly what I did:

    (1)  I decreased the lifetime of the mail queue so the system gives up sending after one day instead of three.
    To do this I decreased the value of queuelifetime in /var/chroot-smtp/var/qmail/control/queuelifetime to 86400, which is one day in seconds.

    (2)  To reduce the frequency of the messages I edited the /etc/crontab file as follows:
    In the line commented "# every hour check for old mails" it read:
    code:
    3 * * * *    root chroot /var/....etc.
        - which means run at three minutes past every hour of every day.
    I changed it to:
    code:
    3 */4 * * *  root chroot /var/....etc.
        - which means run at three minutes past every fourth hour of every day.

    As Ollion points-out, you have to copy the change you make in /etc/crontab to /etc/crontab-static so the change remains after a reboot.  You could do this simply by copying the file /etc/crontab over /etc/crontab-static.

    I hope this little elaboration helps someone out.
