Problems with SMTP

Sounds like there is a problem with port 25 getting through the firewall. What does the PacketFilter live log say?

I have a SMTP problem too... Bounces double bounce... An example appears below

Any ideas?

I get the same error also when tring to send mail to my registered mail server that sits on my "dmz".  I have narrowed it down to one possable issue.  I belive it to be this: I have disabled dns proxy on the firewall so even if it could send mail it has no idea that my mail server is sitting behide it (on the dmz).  Some one correct me if im wrong about this.  One possable solution would be to mod the /etc/hosts file and give my mail server's internal ip an alias to smtp.whatever.com which appears to be what it trys to send to?

I notice that (even though smtp proxy is turned off) ASL is still listening on all intefaces on port 25.  Similar to ssh, which should not be listening on the WAN interface.  Because of this, I can't seem to forward port 25 to anything behind the server.

Daryl, you are having the same problem as me.
Your bounce messages are being rejected because the sender domain does not exist.

ex:
mail from: MAILER-DAEMON@reactor.radio-active.net.au

error: domain reactor.radio-active.net.au does not exist. Sender domain must exist.

ASL sends emails from its own host name. If the dns hostname doesn't really exist in internet DNS, then it will be rejected by many mail servers out there. I think it should be possible to tell ASL to send mails simply as MAILER-DAEMON@domain.com, instead of MAILER-DAEMON@host.domain.com.

Actually Darryl, I think in your case because reactor.radio-active.net.au does have internet DNS records, its simply that it has no MX record, so the smtp server you are sending to does not know which host is responsible for handling any mail which needs to come back to it.

Same thing really, sender domain unroutable.
