How to change external interface MAC address ?

Hello,

I'm using the free SW version of UTM 9.

I've been using it for years, connected behind my DSL router (provided by my ISP)

I will soon be connected to FTTH and I would like to connect the UTM directly to the Fiber box (with an eth cable) without using my new ISP box.

To that purpose I need to clone the ISP box eth MAC address into my UTM external NIC MAC address.

Can I use the Virtual MAC option in the UTM UI ?

my search on the forum led me to several topics but they are quite old and my not apply to the current versions of UTM.

Here's my NIC info:

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller

(I have several other NIC I can use with different chipsets if required, although it seems to be quite painful; to change a NIC in the SW version ...)

 Thank you !

  • Hello David,

you got the correct setting. BUT if Virtual MAC works or not depends on the used NIC / driver implementation. It' s only guaranteed to work with Sophos Appliances, I think.

    Best

  • Thank you Alexander.

if I wanted to try ahead, is there any way to see if it works like below:

    1- set the Virtual MAC

    2- reboot

    3- run ifconfig locally

    Or

3 - ping the UTM, then run ARP -A to check the MAC discovered

Also, would the Virtual IP replace the HW MAC or would the NIC report both ?

Worst case scenario I can install an HP NC7170 card (Intel 82546EB)....
