Connection lost to smtp server

I have Astaro 8.30o running on a Vmware ESXi 4.x hypervisor.
I have a mail server running on another VM: Zimbra.

When sending mail from my cell phone I get a strange connection lost with associated errors on the client.

I see nothing from the firewall logs.
Connections work fine from a local [inside the firewall] network.
HTML interface to the server works fine.  [not a serious part of the troubleshooting]

I have the Zimbra vm lised in the host list under Mail Security \ SMTP section,
and I have Authenticated Relaying allowed.

Can anyone think of a Astaro-sourced cause of this problem?
I'm looking at Zimbra as well but can't think of a reason for the issue.

Thanks,
Doug

  • Doug, is this new behavior?  If so, have you tried restoring a configuration backup from back when there was no problem?

  • My email infrastructure has changed dramatically recently: from postfix to Zimbra [strong recommendation btw]

I found the issue.  Problem associated with DNS.

    Thanks for the input.
  • If it's not too complicated, please describe your solution.

  • It's embarassing:  the  vm setup as the Zimbra server didn't have a fixed ip address. [Doh!] Astaro somehow mistook the DHCP request and gave it a new address from the pool.  This caused 'issues' with email in a number of ways I imagine you can guess.  My standards for my home mail server aren't any where near 'corp-ready'.

  • Thanks, Doug.  I know I've served as an object lesson too many times in the past (and will in the future, I'm sure)! [;)]

    Cheers - Bob
