POP3 Proxy Problem

Hi everybody,

I'm running a 7.510 Software with enabled POP3 Proxy. Everything works fine. POP3 Proxy is configured not to prefetch Mails, a POP3 Server entry exists. Four different Mailclients (Outlook 2003, Thunderbird and two Microsoft Mail Clients) are able to get POP3 Mails. All POP accounts are on the same POP3 Server.

Since first beta release of Version 8 i try to upgrade to the new version by installing the new version and then restoring my configuration. Last try was yesterday. I installed 8.102 software iso image and restored my configuration of my running 7.510. I also tried not to restore my old V7 configuration and to new setup V8 incl. POP3 proxy setup.

Everything works fine, but the POP3 proxy did not work for all clients. Sometimes the thunderbird client get his mails, sometimes the Outlook client and sometimes a Windows mail client. Sometimes one ore more clients get mail for about one hour and then suddenly they get no more mail and report a timeout when connecting to the POP server.  After a while (may be over 1 or 2 hours) the same client, which are not able to get mails, suddenly are able to connect to POP3 server and get mails. 

When i disable the POP3 proxy all clients are able to get mail from this moment on. When i reenable the POP3 proxy the problem come back.

I tried to enable prefetching, to specify the POP3 server, to delete the POP3 Server entry, ... - nothing helps.

Any help or ideas are welcome.

    Hi,
    the 7.5xx backups don't work correctly in v8.***. You will need to build a new configuration. From memory there is trial migration program in the latest beta.

    Hi Ian,

    thank you for your answer, but it did not work.

    The problem was another thing. Have a look on my network configuration, which was not changed between V7 and V8.

    See Figure before.png. It shows my DSL subscriber line, a AVM Fritzbox which i use only as a modem, the astaro and the clients. Please metion that the Fritzbox has one DSL and two LAN Ports. 

    The first one of the LAN Ports i used to connect PPPoE between the Fritzbox and the Astaro. The second LAN Port of the Fritzbox was configured as a normal LAN Host with a IP address of my LAN segment (192.168.168.***). I used this to be able to have a look into the Fritzbox over the Fritzbox GUI.

    Using Astaro V7 everything works fine. When I dump the LAN interface of the astaro the request of the different mailclients (port 110) could be monitored at the LAN (internal interface).

    After installing V8.*** the tcpdump shows a  strange result. Some mailclient requests could be monitored at the LAN interface but some request are reaching the external (PPPoE) interface of the astaro.

    I dont know why?????

    After disconnecting the LAN port (second port of Fritzbox), see figure after.png, all requests reached the internal (LAN) interface of my astaro and everything works fine.

    But why does this happen? I only changed the astaro frimware and do not make any changes on my network. I dont know what changes in firmware made such an effect.

    Hi Siggi,
     I am guessing here, but I suspect your Fritzbox was also advertising itself as a gateway of some sort faster then the ASG. The beta version of the ASG is a bit slower in responding than the production version because of all the extra debugging code that is enabled.

    Review the Fritzbox configuration and disable all functions. I know they should automatically be disabled when the box is put in bridged mode. From work I was doing on a new Billion modem/router not every feature was disabled in bridge mode. The Billion was dumped as too unstable, my phone service is to long for it work reliably.

    yes you might be right. But the problem exists also since the first stable (production) release of version 8 and not only in the beta releases and all other functions of the Fritzbox seem to be disabled.

    Something must have been changed in the V8 version, so that the two connections on the Fritzbox (PPPoE and LAN) seem to merge packets or something else.

    But nevertheless, really it's not a problem. I stay my cable disconnected from the Fritzbox and will attach it only when i need to inspect the Fritzbox because of a line problem or ...
