Unable to send email

I am using Astaro Secure Gateway v8.001, the free version. I am rather new at this. I did the basic configuration. Turned on POP proxy service. I am able to receive email, but when I send the email program (Thunderbird) it times out 'trying to connect to the server'.

I'm not certain where I am going wrong. I'm sure it is a misconfiguration on my part because I was able to send email without any problem prior to activating/installing the firewall on my network.

I would appreciate some help with this.

Sending is done using SMTP. Did you create a packet filter rule allowing outbound SMTP?

I have not created any as there was a 'email' rule created by default when I installed the software. I made some assumptions about ports but I will look at the definition and be sure that the ports my provider is using are the ports allowed by this rule.

I know that GMail seems to use a port I wasn't familiar with (586 or 587 - can't remember which). I will check my thunderbird configuration and see if the port matches the port in the rule.
