Mail How To

I am fairly knowledgeable on the setup and config of the ASG v7 software from a network, packet filter, security perspective BUT I am lost when it comes to setting up email scanning.  Is there a simple "How To" document out there I can read over that would give the basics of how the Astaro email security system works and is setup???

The config I am trying to setup is an ASG v7 device where the client is using an external email system (hosted web server) via IMAP.  I would like to ensure all incoming emails are scanned for virus, malware, etc. as the ASG is suppose to do.  If it is possible to also scan outgoing email that would be a plus (but not a requirement).

    Actually, Barry, this is a question very close to one within the last couple months.  I think I learned then the basics of how to use the SMTP Proxy with an external host.

    Instead of using it as a smart host, I think he would use the IP of the mail host in the 'Host list' on the 'Routing' tab, and in 'Allowed hosts/networks' on the 'Relaying' tab.  Then, John, have the client's MX record point to the Astaro.

    There is a SmartHost setting to do though - the mail host must point at the Astaro as its smarthost.  What I don't know is whether this must be on an Additional Address; I'd try it without that at first.  If it does require an Additional Address, then you also might need a NAT rule like 'Any -> SMTP -> Mail Host : SNAT from External [Additional] (Address)'.

    The mail clients should point directly at the mail host for both IMAP and SMTP.  Email sent by the clients will go to the mail server, it will send the mail to the Astaro, the Astaro will run an anti-virus check and send the mail to the recipient's domain.  Email sent to the client's domain will go to the Astaro, the Astaro will do anti-spam and anti-virus, then deliver the mail to the mail host.

    Is that what you're trying to accomplish?  However this works out, you should submit an article to the Astaro KnowledgeBase. [:)]
