Recipient verification method flawed

Yesterday I set up a small distribution list on my mail server, but this morning I was informed that every incoming mail intended for that list was being bounced with a 550 "Unknown recipient".

Further investigation revealed that Astaro uses a "bouncing mail from..." inquiry to the back-end mail server for the purposes of checking for valid addresses, but my mail server does not regard distribution lists as valid bounce recipients, and thus fails the inquiry.

My mail server is Mailtraq, but I suspect that it is probably not unique in this behavior.

Meanwhile, I'm left with the choice of either disabling recipient verification or adding exceptions for every distribution list I create, unless anyone has any better suggestions.

  • Maybe I'm not seeing where server and mailer and Astaro are relative to each other, but I don't think the SMTP Proxy works the way I understand what you're saying.
