Hosted Exchange - Antispam and Antivirus Setup

If the company hosting my Exchange didn't provide adequate anti-spam and anti-virus protection, I think I'd find a more-responsible supplier!

That said, if your provider can point at your public IP and identify it as a smarthost, then I don't see any reason you can't accomplish what you want.  You would need to change your public MX record to point at your Astaro and configure to relay from and forward inbound mail to the hosted Exchange.

I have no reason not to trust them. I'm just used to seeing the results for myself. Thanks for the information. Hardly seems worth the effort. I'll just stick with the hosting providers services.

Sorry, I certainly didn't mean to come across like that.  I just wouldn't recommend paying both for hosted email and an Astaro Mail Security subscription.

As for the effort involved, it's minimal:

• Have your ISP add a second MX record to your authoritative name server.  It should have a lower number (higher priority) and point at the IP on the Astaro's External interface.
  
• Once that has propagated around the world (What's My DNS? Global DNS Propagation Checker), have the folks who host your Exchange set it to use your Astaro as a smart host.  Check with them before starting this though because they may not be able to do this for you.
  
• Once the above are complete, enable the SMTP Proxy on the 'Global' tab.  On the 'Routing' tab, add your domain name, select "Route by static host" and click on the green "+" to add a host definition with the IP of your hosted Exchange.  On the 'Relaying' tab, add the new definition to 'Host-based relay'.
