astaro suddenly added a domain to an already complete emailaddress

Hi all,

Hope someone has an idea. One of my customers sent out a mail from our mailserver, which routes to the astaro firewall, which in turn delivers to the internet.

The customer sent the mail to address@domain.com, in the mail server log files (running sendmail) I can see that the messages are successfully delivered to astaro, with the correct email address .

THEN, I look in the astaro smtp logs, and to my surprise, the message there has a different address, namely: address@domain.com.my_own_domain.com

So, somewhere along the way, something added .my_own_domain.com to the recipient address. Since on the mailserver the address in the logs is correct, I'm guesssing that astaro decided to add the extra domain info.

Anyone has an idea why..?

It happened only once, so I'm hoping that it will not happen again, but still I'd like to understand what happened...

Regards,
MJ

  • I'm only guessing...

It seems unusual that someone not in your domain would have relaying rights off your server.  I wonder if there aren't two different emails, one that was sent directly, and which arrived at the Astaro with a correct address, and another one that somehow went through your mailserver and was sent to the Astaro with an incorrect address as above.

  • thanks for your reply.

Maybe it could have been a coincidence, yes. It hasn't happened since, and as long as it doesn't happen again, I'm happy. :-)
