SMTP Message Size exceeded

Hello,

I've got the following problem with ASG 7.306. I set "Max message size" on 20 Megabytes and checked the SIZE-Option with telnet, it returned 20971520 Bytes.

Unfortunately I noticed that ASG rejected mails in the size of 17 Megabytes with the following message:

Has anybody an idea for it? Perhaps someone made the same experience.

Does your message really have the size of 17 MB or does it contain an attachment which has the size of 17 MB?. If an attachment is base-64 encoded the result is around 1/3 larger than the original file.

In this case I wanted to send a Microsoft Word 2003 document, but I don't know if it is a base-64 encoded file. I have a Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server which uses the ASG as a mail relay and Exchange is also configured for a max. Message size of 20 Megabytes, but Exchange doesn't reject the mail.

A file gets encoded when you add it as an attachment to an email. How big is the file on your disk?

The size of that file is 17,4 Megabytes.

Then the message size will be around 23 MB. That's larger than 20 MB.

Oh, I didn't know that, I try to read some information about base-64 coding. I don't understand why Exchange doesn't reject the mail!?

Exchange internally stores mails in its own format which may be the original size plus some overhead. When your mail leaves the exchange server it gets converted to an rfc-822 compliant mail with base-64 encoded attachments. So the mail is larger than 20 MB when it arrives on the asg, but may be smaller in exchange server.
