SMTP - Scanning Outgoing Messages

I am going to assume that you you are not running exchange and that your email is hosted elsewhere and that you forward your outgoing email to their smtp server for delivery. If soo....

That feature doesnt work.
I have a ASG v7.4 and have had a trouble ticket open with them since 1/27/09.

I got an email yesterday saying that the fix will be included in v7.40 when it was re-released and informed them that I was lucky enought to get it and that it wasnt fixed.

I then received another email stating he would advise the engineers that the fix wasnt for my issue.

From the current on-line help:

Content Scan For Relayed Messages
When this option is enabled, also messages sent by either authenticated or host-based relays will be scanned for malicious content. Note that the same anti-virus settings apply to relayed (outgoing) messages as for incoming messages.

From the V6.2 User's Manual:

Security Note:
Messages sent from networks listed in the Allow Relay
from window will never be scanned by Spam Detection.

It's my impression that outgoing email is not scanned for extensions and expressions, but I hope an Astaro engineer comes by and comments on this thread to give us all final confirmation of what is and isn't checkd in V7.4.

Content scan for relayed (outgoing) messages

X Scan relayed (outgoing) messages (X = check mark)

When this option is active, messages submitted by either authenticated or host-based relays are also sent to the content scanner. Turning this off can improve performance if you have a large number of outgoing emails. 

This is one of the reasons I bought the Astaro. Nothing more embarrassing than sending your customers a virus or foul/vulgar emails from an infected computer.

About the only thing that does work is the footer message in the Virus scan.
But that doesnt work good as it shows up as an attachment and is not inserted at the end of the email.

Again, my guess is that this is a little sloppiness in the documentation, and that the use of the word "content" on the page was inadvertant.  You know, that the writer was thinking "scan the content for viruses" but didn't happen to use that wording.

That would really piss me off, especially after support crawled around my Astaro and I then had to waste time and configure it for the engineers to check around as well.

I wish the relay would handle it better when a virus is detected in smtp.
When I send the eicar test file out using MS Outlook all I get is a non delivery report with "No transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient." in the message.

The admin should at least get an email, if not the user that there was a problem with the email sent.

Hi All

I am running two ASG 425a in HA / HA config.

I want to scan outgoing emails for both file extensions and expressions, I have the box ticked for scan relayed (outgoing) messages but I can still send exe files to my gmail account. I have a list of host based relay servers and it is using 'transparent' mode. I am using a smart host as well.

PS incoming emails are scanned no problems, just outgoing is the issue.

I am running exchange 2007, client is outlook 2007. I just renamed a .exe file to .txt thats all

Exchange also allows blocking by file extension.  That sounds like its behavior.
