SMTP 550 5.7.1 "We do not relay"

Sorry for the error in my initial post.  My 550 relay error was not due to the smtp proxy or pop3 proxy.  I have 2 ppoe dsl lines I uplinked together in multipath mode.  ** Only when both lines are uplinked and I try to send email using any outgoing server OTHER than verizon do I get the relay 550 error as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject:  TEST
      Sent: 2/3/2009 10:56 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      'jminotti@ymail.com' on 2/3/2009 10:56 PM
            550 5.7.1 ... we do not relay   

I can send all email and forward and relay email using my primay email  outgoing server from gmail or work and bypass verizons outgoing server as long as I disable one of the dsl lines.  Not what I wan to do.  I did read something about making sure you do not have two default gateways if you uplink but then I get an error on the dsl line I unchecked the default gateway option.   

there is probably a way to fix this with the correct multipath rules.   I unfortunately can't figure this out.  

Any help would be appreciated.

    Version of Astaro?  Please confirm that you're using a Verizon SmartHost.  What mail server are you using?  Which Astaro Proxy are you using - POP3 or SMTP?

    I do not run any mail, Web or DNS servers.  I have SMTP Proxy Turned Off.   I have the POP3 Proxy turned ON.  This does not seem to matter,  on or off I get the error if I have both DSL lines uplinked together.  Once I disable one DSL line (either one - it does not matter which dsl connection I disable) it works fine.  

    Also, I can get outgoing mail to send using the SmartHost option with my verizon credentials but that will route my work outgoing email through verizons outgoing mail server.  OR - ( even worse) if I use my work email connect info in SmartHost then my personal emails would be going out over my work server.  I work from home on weekends and I cannot route work email through verizons outgoing server.   I am not sure what mail server my primary email account uses.  I have two pop3 email accounts set up in outlook - 1 for my personal verizon email and one for my work email if needed.  I just change which one is the default in outlook and send from that account.  Works fine with only one dsl line enabled.     

    The Multipath rules I have enabled   

    1 Example HTTP [by Source/Destination] [persistence by combination of SRC and DST IP address]
    Any  → Web Surfing  → Any 

    2 Example SMTP [by Destination] [persistence by DST IP address]
    Any  → SMTP  → Any 

    3 Example DNS [by Connection] [balance DNS request individually]
    Any  → DNS  → Any 

    4 POP 3 [by Connection]
    Any  → POP3  → Any \


    If there is a way to make all email traffic use only one dsl line that might work.

    yes there is.

    Please disable rule 2) and 4).

    than create a new rule
    5) all mail via DSL1 (by Interface - DSL1)
    Any -> SMTP/POP3 -> Any

    enable it, done.

    Thank you.  

    Solved the Problem.  No more mail relay errors when I set the Multipath rule to go over my home DSL only.  

    I am still wondering what would cause the error when I have the POP3 and smtp going over both dsl lines just in case one fails??  For me this works great but someone else might need the failover.

    Hi Jman, 

    many Mail providers allow SMTP relaying only afters successfull POP3 authenetication. 
    If you authenticated with POP3, your ip address is allowed to relay email.
    But if your SMTP connection uses the second line, than this ip adress is not validated and gets the error. 
    That's at least my assumption.

    The multipath rule 'by Interface' is intelligent enough to fail over to another multipath interface if your 'home dsl' interface fails. This means multipath rules ALWAYS include failover to another line. But as long as 'home DSL' is available, POP3 and SMTP traffic will be send out that way. 

    therefore you have all you want. [:)]
