Bounced SMTP mail

Hi, Joe.  Are you sure your Mail Manager is showing bounces with 553?  Where would the Astaro SMTP send the email with an incorrect address?  When you send an email not using Astaro, are you using the same client and email domain/service?

Good question!!! I would hope to the senders address (Me) in the form of a new email or forward.

I cant believe that the Astaro would just discard it and say "oh well".

When I send to an unroutable address, I receive the following message which includes the sent mail from "Mail Delivery System [Mailer-Daemon@FQDN-of-my-Astaro]":

following address(es) failed:

    Unrouteable address

I am not using authenicated relaying. 
It is setup for Host-based for my Internal Network.

I thought you said that you have no mail server.  We've never tried to use the Astaro Proxy as a mail server, but I doubt you can use it as such by putting various user-hosts into 'Host-based relay'.  Probably, it would do what you want if you allowed your network in 'Authenticated relay'.

I dont have an internal mail server.
My email is hosted at email.mydomain.com

Any email that is sent orginates from my internal network, so I dont need to authenticate.

All I need the Astaro to do, is filter the expressions, scan for virus's and pass the email to my host for delivery, not act as a mail server.

If I send an email via POP3 that is blocked because of an expression or spam I get a notification, why not SMTP?

I am confused here.
IS this too simple for the Astaro?

It never made sense to me that in order to setup SMTP I had to up a bogus host with a non-existant ip address in the routing tab to get email sent via SMTP.

If it's true that a bogus host is required, then I've learned something.  Where did you read about that?

I'm pretty sure you need to have your internal network in 'Authenitcated Relay' and email.mydomain.com in 'Upstream Hosts'.

Anyways, the help screen states 

Upstream Host List
An upstream host is a host that forwards e-mail to you, e.g., your ISP or external MX. If you get inbound e-mail from static upstream hosts, it is necessary that you enter the hosts here. Otherwise spam protection will not work properly.

No one forwards mail here since it us hosted elsewhere, and no one is allowed send send/relay mail from the internet.

I may play with this a little later (when no one is one) and try what you are suggesting.

It justs seems strange that Astaro's config us geared more towards hosted mail. I have to use my mail hosts SMTP server to send email as our ISP is comcast and if I try to send email directly to the address and they have any kind of "spam filter" or security it wont except the email becuase the domain traces back to comcast and the email says its from my domain, lol.

As you describe it, you do need the entry in 'Upstream Hosts'.  The classic reason is the one you describe where port 25 traffic (SMTP) is blocked except for trusted smarthosts.
