Upstream Host List

In the documentation, we can read:

Upstream Host List
An upstream host is a host that forwards e-mail to you, e.g., your ISP or external MX. If you get inbound e-mail from static upstream hosts, it is necessary that you enter the hosts here. Otherwise spam protection will not work properly.

Which functionalities are changed when you insert relays in this list ?

Thank you for your answer.
Regards,

Romano Banchieri

  • If you have all email delivered from a single relay host, then you should put that in the upstream host list and check the box for 'Allow upstream/relay hosts only' to prevent mail from arriving from any other source.

If that doesn't answer your question, then please elaborate on your situation.

    Cheers - Bob

  • Hi Bob,

I would to know why "Otherwise spam protection will not work properly".
Which kind of antipam feature is different for the hosts in this list than for the other hosts.

  • I hope one of the folks playing with the 7.400 Beta show up here to correct my mistakes, because I'm "reading between the lines" given what I do know.  I don't know the exact difference between how the anti-spam service handles a regular host and how it handles a relaying server.

I suspect that there is no difference between the two.  The difference is how the Astaro is configured to deal with email that is relayed by other servers.  I think that it won't work right if you don't identify the relaying servers for the Astaro.

If your domain's MX record points, for example, to a service that pre-scrubs emails for ones that can be discarded because they come from an address on a RBL, then the IPs of that relaying service need to be in here.  If all emails sent to your domain go through that service, then you should check the box to reject SMTP from any other IP.

Sorry, that's the best I can do.  I would appreciate getting more information from someone else.

    Cheers - Bob
