For the past 3 weeks we have had a drastic increase in the number of incoming connections on our SMTP proxy causing some heavy loads on the CPU. Which is causing legitimate e-mail to not be received for up to 3 hours after the sender had sent the message.
I've lowered the threshold for spam quarantine from 4 to 6 which has helped somewhat, but still having large delays in receiving e-mail. Besides upgrading the hardware or a new server, is there anything I can do? Changing around the max connections setting in the past to 50 or 99 has caused the server to lock up, it is currently at 20.
We've had this problem before, but it had only lasted a few days, the connections decreased and mail delivery had returned to normal.
Thanks,
Paul
