SMTP fails with smart host

I've used smarthost for some time.  And, for the most part it works.

But, lately it seems to fail more often than it works and I'm not sure why.  This is a home system and I don't have an internal mail server, so I use smarthost.  When I first set this up, I have a dummy IP address in place for an internal mail server.

From the log, I see..

Thoughts?  Why do I have to set up an internal mail server if I am using smarthost to connect to my ISP?

    If you don't have an internal mail server I would not bother with the SMTP proxy at all.  Just point your mail client to the ISP's SMTP server.

    The SMTP proxy is mostly designed for having an internal mail server.

    For a couple of reasons...

    It is there and I would like to use it and it does work - when it feels like it.

    I like the idea of having my internal boxes point to one single server (in this case, my gateway).

    I´m curious: what do you mean by "... for the most part it works"?

    * does the smarthost require authentication?
    * can you determine a certain time of date when it does not work?
    * is this all smtp.log shows for the message that could not be relayed?

    The only reason I can imagine that the smarthost will not always relay is when you send to many emails at one time...

    That is the strange part.  It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.  It ran fine for about a month, then people started to tell me they didn't get my email.  

    Yes, it requires authentication, but that is set up correctly as it does work, again, most of the time.  

    The failures do not to be time related.

    Yes, this is all the log shows for the message that could not be relayed.  In fact the next message, sent 1 minute later goes through.

    The failure happens on single emails, not a large distribution.

    I'm beginning to wonder if it is related to the signature updates.

    Maybe you try to use another smarthost for testing so you can determine if the prolem is related to your regular smarthost...

    Again me: since I´m "new" in the 7.1 business I missed that the "real" smtp logging isn´t done anymore in smtp.log but you can find it in exim.log.

    Have a look over there and I´m sure you will find the cause of the problem soon...
