Lately my ASG220 has been experiencing severe network slowdowns that seem to have been fixed simply by disabling the SMTP Proxy. Obviously, this is something that I would rather not have done since it was our first line of defense in dealing with all the spam, virus and trojan's being sent by email, but with the SMTP Proxy we experienced the following issues:
- Network gradually getting slower and slower to a point where our 10 Mbps full duplex connection would be running at the 1 Mbps at best.
- The number of connections would be ever increasing, up and over a 1000. When disabled, we hover around 300 - 400.
I work with roughly 60 employees for a kid game portal company and have been very satisfied with the firewall features of the ASG220, but the SMTP proxy has never seemed to have properly worked. Here's how the proxy was configured:
- Transparent Mode: Enabled
- AV Scanning: Single scan / Quarantine
- AntiSpam: Use recommended RBLS / Block dialup/residential hosts
- Smart host enabled
- All internal email servers have been added to the safe lists and email is properly forwarded to the main internal email server.
