lowest numbered MX record?

We have had our 7.x firewall up for a while. This problem is that we are losing some emails with the following error. It doesn't happen with every email. But it happens with some and all of them are from our satellite office. They get their mail with pop3 and send with relay authenticated to our internal Active Directory. This is working fine and perhaps one out of every 20 messages going from one of our external users to internal uses gets caught. The rest are fine and I can't find any particular pattern.

Support has no clues.

    Which machine is the lowest MX record?  The Exchange box or the firewall?

    The firewall should be lowest IMHO and then have the firewall handle mail direction to the Exchange server (for specific domains).

    Why send outbound mails from the branch off to your site at all?  Just use their local SMTP server, (ISP?).

    The Astaro box was the only MX record. One of the fixes I tried was to add the local box's public IP. That didn't change the behavior either way.

    Why not their local smtp--mostly convenience. We also have some people who have laptops and it's easier to have them point at us and I don't think they are up to changing smtp servers. And we never had problems with this until we upgraded from 6.3 to 7. (And as I said, this is working maybe 95% of the time)

    I don't know what you mean by that Gert. We are using the transparent SMTP proxy and the IP of the mail server is listed in the SMTP Proxy as the "Internal Server." The internal mail server is listed by a defined host, not resolved by dns.

    I've seen this issue with the following scenario on 6.312:

    1. You use Astaro to relay mail to 1 or more internal servers and the MX record is set to Astaro's primary external IP.
    2. You also have another internal server (call it MailServer-B) which is NATted that doesn't get it's mail routed through Astaro, it's MX record is set to an alias on Astaro's external interface.
    3. You relay a message through Astaro to MailServer-B. The mail gets dropped with the message "lowest numbered MX record points to local host" instead of relaying it to MailServer-B's NATted IP address.

    I'll look at see if I see something (again).

    But no, we have one internal mail server and it's the one the astaro is supposed to forward to.

    The internal mail server IS a web host though for exchange webmail.

    At this point I'm thinking of just trashing it and rebuilding it. I think either something didn't save right at one or another upgrade or I have something stuck somewhere that I'm overlooking again and again. It's a simple setup and I could have rebuilt it several times by now.
