Considering Purchasing Astaro

The Astaro works quite well.  I've used other products as well and the Astaro is as good as any of them.

Depending on the e-mail policies you choose to implement, lots of SPAM never gets into the box in the first place.  But assuming the email sender followed your policies (meaning your choice of standard email sending rules), the message is then allowed into the Astaro.  Once there, each e-mail is scored based on all sorts of categories (including your little blue pill).  Based on that score, the message is deleted, quarantined, tagged and / or sent to the next upstream recipient - typically a mail server or user.  You get to adjust the trigger scores the way you like them.

Messages that are sent to quarantine, if the admin desires, can be released by end users, and end users can also be allowed to whitelist the sender.  Of course the admin can release any message.  Incidentally, malware, such as a virus, can only be released by someone with admin rights.  Yes, you can set end users to receive a daily digest of SPAM.  Further you can also set a portal that end users can go to as often as they want to check and make sure they haven't missed something important without waiting for the daily digest.

You asked the question - how many SPAMs get through.  Well, that's an easy and difficult question to answer.  For myself, about 150 messages a day arrive addressed to me at the outside edge of our Astaro.  Probably about 25-30 or so are desired.  And I have to personally deal with 5 or so unwanted messages on any given day - using either MS Outlook or Mozilla's Thunderbird - both of which do a bit of SPAM pruning themselves.  So that means that maybe 3% of my messages are SPAM that is getting through, and 97% is handled perfectly.  BTW - the ones that get through are not blue pills, etc., but generally look pretty legit.

But I say the question is easy and difficult because it depends on how you configure your SPAM traps, where you go hard and soft on interdiction, your end users needs and the type of business you're in.  Which way do you lean: You never want to miss a legit e-mail even if some SPAM gets through.  Or the opposite - You never want to get a piece of SPAM even if some legit email is quarantined.  What ever your position, no SPAM filter is flawless.  Nonetheless, I never hear SPAM complaints anymore with the Astaro configured and in operation.

Now, one other subject, using a 220 with 100-500 users.  100 maybe, depending on what other Astaro features you're running, but it could be too small.  A 220 for 500 users - for most everyone, definitely too small.  The key here is the amount of traffic and services the Astaro will have to deal with.  Since the Astaro is a UTM (Unified Threat Management) box, is has a lot of features you will probably want to use.  You can get help right sizing a box, but more info will be needed.  100-500 users is quite a span.

Well, I may be biased (since I'm a reseller), but we've been past resellers of other anti-spam products, and the new Anti-Spam engine in Version 7 seems to be doing a very good job.  The only thing I'd caution you on is to make sure that you are using an appliance or custom hardware that's sufficient for the job.  If you are running more than 100 users, you really need to be looking at a 320, at least, or a software license with decent hardware.   A 220 may not have enough "horsepower" to handle email for that many users, particularly if you enable some of the other features in Astaro.  Some environments might "slide by" with a 220 and that many users, but the first spam "storm" that hits will show that they didn't buy "enough" appliance.

I made a mistake of running mail to the ASG220, with over 150 users. The CPU utilization went to 90%, and 220 was overwhelmed. This will never happen again. Definitely purchase the higher model if you're considering this route, ASG425 maybe. As for me, I'm using a separate appliance for email alone.

ASG 220 is a PIII 1ghz 40 Gb Hdd and 256 Mb of RAM ( 512 mb for Astaro 7 ); i'm running an Astaro software v 5 over a P III 1,13 Ghz, 2x 36 raid 1 Scsi HDDs and 512 Mb of ram and it works very fine for 50 IP license, 50 surfing users , 5 site-to-site VPN and 10.000 mail for weeks with antispam e virus protection enable !

is it possible to upgrade ASG220 RAM to 512 or 1 gb ????
