New ASG Software User - email setup question.

ASG allows you to define a mail "smarthost". This tells the SMTP proxy where to spool the outbound mail. Use your ISPs outbound SMTP server as your smarthost.

Other than that, both the POP3 and the SMTP mail proxies are transparent, so there isn't really anything else that needs configuration in your simple setup.

After you have turned on the SMTP proxy and defined the smarthost on the ASG box, simply use the Internal network address of your ASG box as the outbound SMTP server in your workstation mail clients.

in V6.*** works like you suggested, but in V7.*** you need to trick the proxy into thinking you have a mail server by adding a dummy device in the e-mail internal server box and then disabling the per domain entry that will be automatically created. Without doing this the smtp proxy won't start. 

At the moment there is a bug in the smtp server where the advice that a message was scanned is not added.

Okay, First there is a "smarthost" in the smtp advanced tab.  So I put my isp's smtp server and login info there.

I also created a dummy internal server in the global section.  I also put my dyndns domain in the email domain section.

Please let me know if this is right for sending email.  I normally use the web based stuff here, but it would be cool to  be able to send the ASG alerts to my inbox.

As for pop3, for prefetching, don't I need to specify a pop server somewhere in the ASG?  I don't see this anywhere.  Maybe I don't understand but.... How will the ASG know where to prefetch without that info?

Pop3 proxy and prefetch I can answer. From another post in this forum it would appear that the pop3 proxy learns from the e-mail traffic through it eg requests for e-mail from your ISP's pop3 server.

You don't need the smtp proxy enabled to send the ASG alerts etc to your inbox, you enable that function in Management->notifications assuming you are using v7.***. V6.*** has a similar function.

You only need the smtp proxy if you want your outgoing e-mail scanned.

But, Ian, if he doesn't enable the SMTP proxy, won't he need to define a packet filter rule to allow SMTP traffic?

(I have yet to see a successful installation of POP3 with an Astaro, but I'm learning.  We have a bunch of SMTP (with Exchane servers) that work great.)

you have a valid point.

I should have added that to get e-mail outgoing without the smtp proxy you will need a Packet Filter rule to allow port 25.

In reality a home user doesn't need the smtp proxy for outgoing mail unless slightly paranoid like me. My son's play in a numbers games and I am concerned they might pick up a virus. So I use the smtp proxy as a basic e-mail spam protector eg to stop or reduce any chance of outgoing spam.
