[6.304] "weed: failed to initialize AV database" - no mail delivery

We recently had our 6.304 machine stop accepting email from hosts not listed under our "Allow relay from:" settings.

This started around midnight Pacific time on the 7th and was accompanied by frequent messages to the contentfilter.log like this:

(none) weed: failed to initialize AV database

We do not have an antivirus license so no AV scanning should be done. We do use RBL zones and file-extension filtering.

When attempting to deliver an email the server would drop the connection after the body of the message was delivered. Nothing was logged in the smtp.log.

At first we tried killing exim, but that didn't do anything. We also tried rebooting, which didn't do anything.

We finally resolved the issue by forcing a pattern up2date which appeared to resolve the issue.

Anyone else experience this?
