Unable to receive mail from particular server

Hi,

a customer of ours is unable to send mail to us, the mail gets bounced. In the SMTP logfiles the following is logged:

194.109.24.34 is not allowed to send mail from this address or use this HELO string.

What does this mean and how to solve this ? Is the spam filter blocking this server ? Strange thing is that with other blocked mails the reason is show and the SCL score. But with this entry only the above line is logged.

Hi,

I'm not sure, because so far only this client is unable to sent mail to use. We receive mail from others fine. And the IP address mentioned is not our IP-address, but the address of the provider from our client.

What do you use, SMTP Proxy etc.....?
RBL active?
Spam protection?

What does the rejected mail say at Client-side(reason).
What do they use (Exchange or other Server?)
Do you verify recepient/sender under SMTP Proxy etc?

What kind connection do you use, are you sending from the Astaro-box or in combination with your Provider (Smarthost)

Yes, we use the SMTP proxy with RBL, Spam and virus protection enabled. SPF fail check is also enabled (I've turned that one off now, see what happens).

Don't know, haven't heard back from them yet.

Exchange 2003

No those options are turned off

No we don't use a smarthost for ASL. From our internal lan, ASL is confiugred to be a smarthost off course. Our internal servers deliver mail to ASL which relays it.

I've checked all the logs but this is the only entry that is being rejected. There are numerous entries about block connections, but that is due to RBL listing or SCL rating. This IP address is the only one with the specific message without any further explanation in the logs.

I would check to see if their IP address is listed in SORBS or in any of the RBLs you are using. Some of them block ip address blocks of dial up or dhcp users since the majority of people running smtp servers from those ip blocks are spam bots.
