smtp relay issues

I'm having a very consistent issue. We're using the SMTP relay in transparent mode. Internally it works fine. 

Externally, people POP3 into the server and SMTP messages out, using active directory authentication. Generally it works fine.

However, at times the firewall reports that a message went through with a nice completed message in the log and the message did in fact go through. However, the client is not getting acknowledgement and it repeats the send again and again, filling up people's email boxes. The client gets a message that the smtp server couldn't be reached.

The issue continues until the firewall is restarted and then it seems to be fine.

Any ideas?

(Is there some way to make this thing just reboot itself every night at midnight or something?)

    This sounds like an issue for Astaro support to sort out.. have you started a case with them yet?  They don't really read these forums constantly...

    Yeah, I just filed one. This hasn't been a huge issue, it happens every few weeks. Mostly I was trying to figure out if others were having the problem.

    I experience the same trouble as KLambers mentions. I will add two half bits of information:
    [LIST=1]
    • It seems to happen more often wih Gmail than other ISPs.
    • It seems to happen when the Astaro is busy -- e.g., when a big mailing goes out from a user.

    A reboot does not always cure it for me.

    I got a reply that there was an issue that had been fixed in one of the recent updates. I'm a bit dubious though as it's happened very consistently.

    I'm experimenting with turning off the outgoing filter since it isn't really all that relevent anyway.

    It's also VERY rare for this to happen with an external mailer. It's almost always one of our pop clients sending mail.
