Connection timed out

Anyone know why I would see a Connection timed out in the SMTP logs. I take in email with the ASTARO (6.102) SMTP PROXY and try to send to a Email Server across a VPN with another ASTARO (6.102). I worked fine when I routed through a 3party VPN (2 linksys), but once I brought the VPN to ASTARO it stopped connecting. I turned off the transparnet setting on the ASTARO that takes in email and turned off SMTP PROXY on the far side all together.

Any help would be appreciated I'm really stuck.
