Port 25 SMTP Work Around...

Hello Everyone,

I recently had lots of issues sending email and found that (even though they stated on the phone they don’t block "any ports") my ISP is blocking port 25… or I should say “requiring that I use their outgoing SMTP server.”  (If you are interested Read This) Aside from being lied to, I don’t have that big of a problem sending mail out through their system, but what if I wanted to receive mail in through the SMTP Proxy on Astaro…

I have Exchange 2003 behind the FW and would like to utilize the Proxy for inbound emails.  I have seen posts regarding routing outbound SMTP to different ports for services like DynDNS’s Mail Hop Relay, but I haven’t been able to locate anything that helps with inbound.  My assumption is that if I created a NAT rule I would bypass the Proxy all together…  

I’m looking to use a inbound relay service as my MX record so that I can have mail coming in via a different Port number…  Any help would be appreciated, I’ve been using the ASL for about a week so be easy on me!  All of the other services are working great, I’ve been very impressed.

I’ve gotten a lot of help reading other posts, and hope for some additional insight from all of you…

    Sure telnet in as long as your not at a T-Mobile Hotspot... I was only able to connect to their relay SMTP service, any outbound attempt was intercepted by it (or I'm just not all that Telnet Savvy).  I'll have to look around and see if I can find another location that doesn't block port 25 to test...

    As far as using a relay service is concerned, I have no problem doing so, but would that bypass the Astaro SMTP Proxy.  Or would I have to alter the EXIM config so that it listens on a different port?  Considering what the proxy will do, I really would like to untilize it, so any additional input would be appreciated.

    OK... I found another WiFi connection that didn't block port 25.  Every time I attempted to telnet the connection timed out.  I would suspect that this would mean Verizon is blocking inbound port 25 as well as outbound.  I did found documentation on how to alter the EXIM configuration so that it will listen to alternative ports... but this is a commercial installation and I don't want to make a change and have it void any license agreements, just in case the box dies again (I had issues with the default factory reset issue that existed in earlier versions and needed to RMA my ASG110).

    If anyone has any insight on this... that type of information would also be very much appreciated.

    You might be able to NAT traffic coming in on a different port to port 25.

    DYNDNS.ORG can do this, They have a mail releay that you can set to another port for this vary reson. They call it MailHop Relay.
