Average Spam Score Dropping

Over the past few weeks, I've been watching our SMTP average spam score drop. On today's executive report, the scores are...

Last 30 - 1.7
Last 7 - 1.1
Yesterday - 0.9
Today - 0.8

A lot of spam is now sneaking in under the thresholds which are (03 Warn) (06 Quarantine).

System Version is 5.206.

Are the spammers getting smarter? Anyone else notice similar behaviour?

    Unfortunately, spammers always getting smarter.

    I've noticed similar problems with every anti-spam system I've ever used.

    Have you tried any of the RBLs?
    Spamcop works well for me.

    Yeah, we use sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org and bl.spamcop.net which help a lot.

    Have not turned on Greylisting though - can anyone comment on its effectiveness? False Positives?

    greylisting does not produce false positives... the first message(s) where
    rejected and the sender get a.. plz send again.. "normal" sender will try again , spammer have no time and bandwith to send again...

    so greylisting is quite usefull ...

    from online help:

    Use Greylisting: Temporarily rejecting emails for a set period of time. The assumption is that since temporary failures are built into the RFC specifications for email delivery, a legitimate server will attempt to connect again later on to deliver the email. How much time is dependent on the SMTP proxy configuration (by default, messages delayed by greylisting will become valid after five minutes and will expire after a week if they are not updated within this timeframe. Once stored in the greylisting archive, your regular email contacts will not be affected by further delays.

    Can the timeframe be changed? We don't get a lot of mails, only about 50,000 to 60,000 a month. (incl. SPAM)
    It would be better if addresses of accepted mails would be stored for about 3 months or at least 1 month.

    Is that possible without "hacking" the Astaro config files?

    The standard retry-setting of Astaro's exim is:
     * * F,2h,15m; G,16h,1h,1.5; F,4d,6h
    and I assume other SMTP-servers have a similar default. That means that greylisted mails are delayed 15 Minutes. Our users would say that that's too much for a "modern" communication-system like eMail, and I would agree with them.
