T=static_smtp defer (-53): retry time not reached

I have just set up a Debian 3.1 Exim4 MTA (my first ever attempt at this) and want to send and receive mail via the Astaro SMTP proxy.

I can send mail out fine but when I try to return the message I get the above error message in the Astaro SMTP Proxy log.

I have searched for the error message on Google but couldn't find it. Not sure what to try next.

    Hi,

    normaly this happens, when your mail-server is not responding. Either the Astaro cant find him, or the Mail-Server dose not like to take mails from the Astaro. 
    Do you have a smtp route to your mail server on the ASL smtp-Proxy? Dose Exim handle your domain properly? Also you should see a entry, if the mail is rejected on the Mail-Server. Normally under /var/log/exim/main.log or error.log.
