How do I disable the SMTP proxy?

It's not Astaro's SMTP proxy.

You can run this fine and still connect to external SMTP boxes.
It normally still listens on 25 even when "shutdown".  Unsure why but it's not affecting your SMTP connects.

Have you allowed your internal network out?
Setup MASQ etc?  Can you access any external sites without using proxies?

Best way would be to watch the packet filter live log and see if 25 is getting blocked internally by Astaro.

If it's not, the problem lays elsewhere.

The computers on my internal network can reach most services on the outside without problems.  I regularly use HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, IMAP, POP, IRC, and other TCP and UDP services on various ports (chat protocols, gaming, etc).  I have a packet filter rule to allow all packets out.

SMTP has been tested on 3 computers, with 4 OS installations (2x WinXP Pro, MacOS X, and Linux) and 3 of those installations have known good client configurations of SMTP servers, having worked perfectly on other networks.  I have tried connecting to 3 different SMTP servers, and the connections time out on each one.  SMTP-SSL (port 465) works fine, but not vanilla SMTP on port 25.  I have tried telnetting to port 25 on an SMTP server, and the connection just times out.

I created an extra packet filter rule, at the top of the chain, to allow all outgoing traffic with D-port 25 and to log all of the packets.  If I look at the Live Log, I see the packets being allowed in green lines in the log, but they still do not make it to the server (or possibly don't make it back).  So, the packet filter is not blocking the packets.  However, since it SMTP is the only thing that doesn't work, and it doesn't work for several known good client configurations and SMTP servers, I can only assume that Astaro is the problem.  Any other ideas about what might be causing the problem?

The correct answer is that you should not disable the SMTP proxy.

A great many ISPs have disabled their customers ability to freely communicating with mail servers out on the Internet via SMTP as they please. The reason for this, is that a lot of the viruses that have infected PCs in the last year or so, have their own SMTP mail agent code, which they use to spew out copies of themselves. The ISPs that have disabled direct SMTP traffic on port 25, thus force you to relay your outgoing mail through their outgoing mail server, instead of sending it directly to the recipient's  mail server.

For the very same virus embedded mail agent reason, a lot of mail servers have been configured to refuse incoming mail from other mail servers that are not known to them. They will accept mail from your ISP's outgoing mail server, since that one is well known, but they will not accept mail from an unknown mail server located at your broadband IP address.

The best way to configure your outgoing mail in such situations, is to enable the outgoing SMTP proxy in your ASL box, and configure it to use your ISP's outbound mail server as its forwarder. Then you configure the email client on your workstations (or your in-house mail server, if you have one) to send their outgoing mail to the ASL box. The ASL mail proxy will spool the mail, and forward it to the ISP's mail server, which will spool the mail and forward it to the recipient's mail server. The delays involved are negligible, and the mail will always get through.

It turns out that my ISP blocks port 25 for its members, but I can request that it be unblocked.  Thank you both for your help, I wouldn't have thought of that if you hadn't suggested it.
