Outlook 2003, SMTP Proxy, Norton Anti Virus

Greetings-

In the past I have noticed that while trying to send mail using the SMTP proxy with Norton AntiVirus installed, regardless of the mail client; I could not send mail using the SMTP proxy until I turned off outbound email scanning in Norton. It seemed that Norton somehow stopped the connection to outbound server as nothing showed up in the logs while attempting to send. This was the case for all versions 2004 and older.

Now I have some guys with newer laptops (XP Pro) that have Norton Internet Security or Norton Antivirus version 2005. It seems the only way I can get them to send mail via the proxy is to turn off ALL Norton services. Simply disabling email scanning on Outbound mail doesn't do it anymore.

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Yes

Norton basically has an in-built SMTP scanning service... It's highly annoying.... Only way I got past it in older versions was to completely disable email scanning.

Now we use Exchange which doesn't use SMTP

Ya, that's what we do with older versions, but disabling outbound email scanning doesn't fix the issue with Norton 2005.

I have a secondary firewall and thought about using some random port for smtp and forwarding it to the internal card of ASL on port 25...would that work? Would the secondary firewall have to be 'allowed to relay' in the global settings section?

Just have to allow the port through and perhaps do some NAT translation ie translate whatever port you pick, to port 25.
