pop3 timeout with big mails?

hi there!

i have a new question to you...
if i have many big mails in my inbox and try to download them (packet filter alows pop3 connection to the big bad internet), i get after some mails a timeout errormessage.
this right now happens when i tried to download 25mb of mails (1x19mb and some smaller ones).
it sucks the first smaller ones, then gives the error.
when i retry the download, i get the previously downloaded mails again.

i´m trying to set up the pop3 proxy for testing, but can anyone tell me where´s the problem? when i connect my laptop to the internet directly everything works well - even faster...

    You will have to increase the timeout. For instance outlook express is one minute, I had to up it to five. However I am still having issues w/ the pop proxy and it has not worked in a month. It keeps pegging the cpu to 100% and nobody can check email.

    If you are testing it make sure you test it with as many users checking their email as possible. When I did the eval I only tested w/ 5 users, I didn't have any problems until it went in the live w/ 100 users.

    Use either version 5.1x or 5.202. 5.20 has issues. Also, as stated increase timeout.

    I have 5.206 and my timeouts are set to over 5 minutes. I get this problem only at initial sign on. If I kill the initial e-mail request and restart it, it completes very quickly. This happens regardless of the amount of e-mail in the server. My e-mail is with my ISP. [:)]

    well, i disabled pop3 proxy now, i´ve tested it with a 57mb email from my office.
    with the proxy and increased timeout to 2mins "usual" mailtraffic >10mb works fine...

    is there anything known, when this issue is fixed?

    what are your hardware specs? I routinely do over 10 mg attachments without issues.  How in the world did you manage a 57 meg attachment??  That's pusing the limits of pop3 itself not to mention any a/v scanners that have to process that massive amount of data.

    my specs are about this:
    450mhz (i think its a celeron, but i´m not shure)
    256 or even 384megs of ram
    20gig hdd
    4 nics (1x realtek 8139, 1x intel pro dual 10/100, 1x onboard)

    i sent the big mail from my office (4mbit up and down) to my isp´s pop3 box (its unlimited) and then downloaded it through my astaro at home through outlook...

    it took a while, but it worked fine...

    if you are doing attachments over 5 megs with that hardware be expecting timeouts or low perforance.  You need at least 512 megs of ram or more and 1 ghz processor or more to handle those kind of attachment sizes you were talking about.

    hmm, i have no problems with that size of attachments.
    but i´ve disabled the mailproxy now, from that on i have no problems anyway. i´m shure, that with the proxy my maschine would be too weak, but without it works like a charm (i just set the timeout to 2min in outlook - just to avoid problems)
